David Zimmerman
I am a Co-Director at Minds & Hearts and a Clinical Psychologist with a passion for understanding and supporting neurodiverse individuals and their families. I am also a board member for a non-traditional education provider that offers therapeutic and community-oriented learning pathways for disengaged students across Australia.
My therapeutic approach is rooted in schema therapy, emphasizing how early life experiences shape patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. I focus on creating a safe and collaborative environment to help clients explore and address these patterns, fostering healthier relationships with themselves and others. My practice is also informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Compassion Focussed Therapy.
With extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, I focus on addressing neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD, as well as the complex interplay of trauma, mood disorders, and identity. My approach integrates an understanding of developmental needs with a trauma-informed perspective to support individuals and their families holistically.
My PhD, awarded with the Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship, focused on adults with autism, exploring factors that influence mental health outcomes. My research has been presented at international autism conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Recent publications include a collaborative review with colleagues Dr. Hugh Walker, Dr. Wesley Turner, and Dutch researcher Dr. Richard Vuijk, examining schema therapy for adults with autism.
As a board-approved supervisor, I provide mentorship in therapeutic interventions, diagnostic assessments, and professional development, with a focus on neurodiversity, developmental needs, and trauma-informed care. I am passionate about training the next generation of clinicians and regularly deliver workshops and guest lectures for universities, public and private organisations.
While my therapy caseload is limited, I am available for diagnostic assessments, supervision, and customised training sessions. Please contact me via Minds & Hearts to inquire about availability.
Available for one-off sessions to provide second opinions on assessment, diagnosis, and therapy plans.
