Dr Hugh Walker
Hugh is a Clinic Director and Clinical Psychologist at Minds & Hearts who works with clients across the lifespan including children, adolescents, and adults. He has a special interest in the assessment, formulation, and treatment of mental health conditions that co-occur alongside neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism and ADHD. He is particularly interested in supporting clients with complex mental health challenges that may not have responded to first line treatments.
Hugh holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) (First Class Honours) from Macquarie University, a Doctor of Clinical Psychology from the University of Queensland (UQ), and a Graduate Diploma in Autism Diagnosis from the University of Western Australia (UWA). Hugh’s doctoral thesis was involved conducting a 70-family randomised controlled trial on a modified version of the Secret Agent Society Program under the supervision of Associate Professor Kate Sofronoff and Dr Renae Beaumont. He was awarded the APS Student Prize for Clinical Psychology in 2015.
Hugh has received individual supervision and training from leading clinical psychologists in the field, including Steve Den-Kaat, Professor Tony Attwood, and Dr. Michelle Garnett. Hugh has completed certifications in evidence-based psychotherapies, including CBT, ACT, DBT, CFT, Schema Therapy, and EMDR Therapy, with a professional interest in psychodynamic principles. Hugh is also trained in autism-specific interventions such as the Westmead Feelings Program, Secret Agent Society Program, and PEERS for Teens and Young Adults.
Hugh has supported neurodiverse clients across a range of settings, including the community, private clinics, and hospitals, delivering both individual therapy and group therapy. He is passionate about providing a warm, supportive environment for clients, empowering them to feel understood and valued.
Hugh became a Board-Approved Supervisor in 2018 and has regularly trains clinical psychology students through university and provides supervision and trainings to private and public healthcare and school settings. Hugh enjoys the opportunity to mentor the next generation of clinicians in the areas of assessment and therapy for neurodiverse clients and their families. In 2023, Hugh was honoured with the Paul Conrad Award for Excellence in Supervision of Master of Clinical Psychology Students at the University of Queensland.
While Hugh’s books are closed to new therapy clients, new diagnostic assessment clients can consult with Hugh through the diagnostic assessment process for which he is one of the lead clinicians. Alternatively, you can request Hugh to review your case when you see a clinician from M&H that he directly supervises. Hugh is available for workshops, trainings, and university teaching on request.
