Psychological Services at Minds & Hearts

Minds & Hearts has been internationally renowned for offering specialised psychological services for the past 20-years to neurodiverse children, adults and families. Our services include the assessment, formulation, diagnosis and treatment of psychological conditions that can often manifest as co-occurring conditions that impact the well-being of neurodiverse people such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychological trauma, and other maladaptive behavioural coping strategies.

Under the clinical supervision of the Clinic Directors who were trained by Professor Tony Attwood and Dr Michelle Garnett, our psychologists strive to operate with a deep understanding of both neurodiversity and healthy childhood development and attachment styles. We pride ourselves on our ability to clearly delineate two important features for our clients. Firstly, there are the important non-modifiable aspects of our client’s presentation associated with their neurodivergence which are to be embraced with compassion, accommodations and sometimes require skills training to improve functional outcomes. Secondly, there are the important modifiable aspects of our client’s presentation that produce psychological distress and impact functioning for which evidence-based psychological therapies can be applied to improve quality of life and functioning.

Our psychologists appreciate the varied ways in which an individual perceives and experiences the world and adapting our approaches and language to suit their needs. We offer a range of evidence-based psychotherapy which are adapted to suit the preferences and cognitive styles of our clients and include:

  • Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Compassion-Focussed Therapy (CFT)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Intensive Short-Term Psychodynamic Therapy (ISTDP)
  • Schema Therapy
  • Eye-Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Our psychologists are also trained in a variety of capacity building programs such as:

  • Emotion-Coaching Programs (Westmead Feelings Program and Secret Agent Society Program)
  • Social Skills Programs (Secret Agent Society Program, PEERS, PEERS Young Adults)
  • Parenting Programs (Circle of Security, Triple P Parenting Programs, Tuning into Teens

Our psychologists, when appropriate for the specific case can often provide support and advice for management of key transitions and/or facilitate mediation in systemic contexts such as schooling, workplaces, family and healthcare.

The clinic directors and senior psychologists provide lectures and workshops to a range of universities, hospitals, schools and workplaces as well as provide training and supervision to other health professionals as part of our mission to advocate on the behalf of neurodiverse individuals and families and continuously seeking innovative ways to support our clients improve their well-being.
